DIY {signature cocktails}

Truth be told I have a small obsession with signature cocktails. My husband has to remind me that its not necessary to create one every time we have guests over for dinner, but really I say why not!? Here are three easy steps to creating one whether its for your next dinner party, a shower or your wedding!

Step #1: Get inspired. The possibilities are really endless here. I suggest browsing some food blogs to get ideas not only visually but for flavors as well. Above some fabulous inspired finds: the top two are via Alexandra Grablewski. And I am still dreaming of these amazing mini pinkberry shakes via Green Wedding Shoes from the unforgettable shower for Leila of Be Inspired PR. Another good source of inspiration (and a lot of fun) would be a visit to one of the new cocktail bars that are popping up everywhere that offer unique and creative cocktail menus. For example Anqi in Costa Mesa makes house infused alcohol such as bubble gum vodka, tomato vodka or vanilla cognac!!

Step #2: Choose your ingredients. Fresh ingredients are key, so look to what’s in season. Fresh fruit, or even herbs which are ever popular right now in cocktails. Think lime + basil; cucumber + tequila; peach + vanilla; honey + lemon or blackberry + mint. An easy way to incorporate these flavors without infusing your alcohol is to create simple syrups infused with some of the flavors above. Simply mix equal parts sugar + water, bring to a boil while stirring, then add a flavor such as cucumbers or basil for a pop of flavor. Then use these to add to your signature drink. Step #3: Garnish or presentation. Don’t neglect the vessel you choose or the impact a fresh garnish can make. It doesn’t need to be complex or even really fancy. For example a simple mason jar makes a fabulous presentation for some sort of spiked lemonade, and fresh slices of cucumbers or even fresh edible flowers are sure to be a hit.
